In 2023 UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee inscribed the “Art of Akhal-Teke horse breeding and traditions of horses' decoration” on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The inscription does not concern only a biological breed. It recognises the knowledge and practice of breeders, seyis, grooms, riders, families, craft practitioners and the people who pass the heritage forward.
The element includes daily care and training, birth and naming customs, racing, mounted games, beauty contests, wedding ceremonies and the making of jewellery and decorative lace.
Inscription creates a responsibility to sustain living practice. Archives, research and international visibility matter when they support knowledge bearers and respect for the horse itself.
UNESCO inscribed not simply a breed, but the “Art of Akhal-Teke horse breeding and traditions of horses' decoration”. Its bearers include breeders, seyis, stable workers, riders, craftspeople, artists and the families in which knowledge is passed on.
The element embraces daily care and training, birth and naming customs, racing, horse games, beauty contests and the decorated horse's place in wedding ceremonies. It is an entire cultural system, not a single festive custom.
Knowledge is passed on informally in the family and stable and formally through training centres and higher education. Demonstrations, workshops, contests, exhibitions, books, films and research make the tradition accessible to new generations.
The central safeguarding measure remains the participation of the bearers themselves: those who breed, care for, train and ride the horses and make their decoration. International recognition matters when it supports their practice and encourages respect for the horse.
